Two Men Assaulted With Bats in Rancho Peñasquitos

Two men suffered serious facial and head injuries after being beaten by bats early Thursday morning in Rancho Peñasquitos, police said.

The victims told police they were walking down the street at 2 a.m. on the 9300 block of Paseo Montalban when a car drove by. Words were exchanged, and at least three men got out of the car. A physical altercation ensued and a bat was used, San Diego Police Department confirmed.

A bystander called police after hearing one of the victims screaming for help.

Both men were both taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital and are expected to survive.

The victims, Doug Birdsall and Kamil Harvell, had just finished up a game night at Doug's home, his father Dave told NBC 7. Because they had been drinking, they decided to walk to the store for a late night snack when they say they were attacked.

“Totally random. Totally senseless. You just don’t think something like that would happen, especially in Peñasquitos," Dave Birdsall said.

No bat or suspects were found on scene, SDPD said.

The suspects' car is described to be a light-colored four-door sedan with possibly a broken window. Detectives hope there is surveillance video from the nearby Jack in the Box and Mobil gas station.

Dave Birdsall says whoever did this needs to come forward.

“I hope they would think seriously about what they’ve done and how senseless this was and how close they came to killing two very nice young men,” he said.

Neither victim has health insurance, so an online fundraising account has been established. As of Saturday afternoon, it had raised over $19,000.
