A truck driver delivering medical supplies struck a hydrant outside a medical building, causing a geyser that flooded two floors of the building.
Water shot about 100 feet into the air around 4:30 a.m. near the shipping/receiving area located next to Scripps Mercy near 4th Avenue and Lewis Street in Hillcrest.
The excess water flooded an elevator shaft and two floors of the building according to San Diego Fire and Rescue.
Driver Lorenzo Gomez said he’s made deliveries into the dock before but on Friday, there was a black truck parked in the way.
He thought he had cleared the truck but realized he hadn’t when the hydrant’s water shot into the air.
“I’m in trouble when I get back to the shop,” Gomez said. He had been driving the route for four months.
It took nearly two hours to shut the water off.
