Trolley Tunnel Construction to Begin in La Jolla

Major construction is slated to begin Monday, March 18 on an underpass for mass transit along the eastern side of Interstate 5 in La Jolla.

The project will create a trolley tunnel underpass at La Jolla Colony Drive as part of the Mid-Coast Trolley Project.

This section of the project is expected to take until late 2019 to complete, according to The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).

The 10.9-mile extension of the trolley line will connect downtown San Diego's Old Town to the University City area.

The costs are estimated to be $2 billion. Funding was raised in part by TransNet, the half-cent sales tax approved by voters.

There will be nine new trolley stations when service begins in 2021.

As workers begin construction of the tunnel bypass, La Jolla Colony Drive will be reconfigured to one lane in each direction.

There will be no access to La Jolla Colony Drive from I-5 from Monday, March 18 to Thursday, March 21 between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
