Towering Flames Destroy Upscale Home

An upscale house in Rancho San Diego was on the verge of collapse Sunday after towering flames devoured the home sending a family of three fleeing, San Miguel Fire District spokesperson Leonard Villarreal said.

The family was inside the home on Hidden Mesa Road watching the Chargers game on television when the house caught fire.

"The family had returned from vacation, were inside their bedroom watching the Chargers game and some programming that followed when the residents smelled smoke," Villarreal said.
The glowing smoke billowed into the night sky as nearly 40 firefighters worked to battle the second alarm fire.  The fire was stubborn and at one point the structure was on the verge of collapse, Villarreal said.  Part of the roof on the home caved in.

Flames towered more than 70 feet in the air.  Concerned residents gathered on the street watching and waiting.

No other structures were damaged and no one was injured.  The cause was under investigation, firefighters said.
