Toreros Headed To NAU for Playoffs

USD football opens FCS Playoffs in Flagstaff against a potent offense

The Toreros aren’t going to have to go far for their first NCAA playoff game. They would have to go far if they make it to a second.

USD’s football program, winners of the Pioneer League title and 21 straight conference games, will head to Flagstaff to face the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in the opener of the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs. Kickoff is 5:00 p.m. (San Diego time) on Saturday, November 25.

Odds are this game will be a shootout. The Toreros are averaging 39.0 points a game while only allowing 16.3 but they have not faced many, if any, offenses like the 25th-ranked Lumberjacks will throw at them.

NAU is scoring 32.0 points a game in a very good Big Sky Conference that put three teams in the 24-school playoff field. However, NAU is giving up 28.6 points a game so USD might be able to stay in it if the score starts to look like an old Arena Football League game.

This is the third time in four years the Toreros are in the post-season. Last year they earned the PFL’s first post-season win when they beat Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo before losing at North Dakota State. If USD beats the Jacks they would head back to The Peace Garden State for another meeting with the Bison.
