Toddler, Mom Injured After Car Slams into Bike

A two-year-old boy was injured after a suspected DUI driver struck a bicycle carrying the toddler and his mother in Ocean Beach Saturday, police said.

According to officers, the collision happened just before 12 p.m. at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard and West Point Loma Boulevard.

Police said a mother was bicycling with her toddler, who was riding in a car seat strapped to the back of her bike, when a suspected DUI driver in a sedan clipped their bicycle from behind.

The sedan kept driving, and the bicycle was dragged a short distance.

Police said a Good Samaritan helped to pull the bike from the vehicle. The toddler suffered moderate injuries but was conscious when officials arrived at the scene.

The boy was transported to the hospital for treatment. The mother sustained minor injuries, including scrapes and cuts.

The driver, who appeared to be in her 50s, was detained by police and given a breathalyzer test at the scene. Police believe alcohol played a factor in the crash.

Kerrylea O'Brien witnessed the aftermath of the crash and said the driver appeared to show no emotion moments after the incident.

"I think she was just so shocked that her reaction may not have been what it should have been," O'Brien told NBC 7 San Diego.

She said the driver did not throw the car into reverse and back off.

The crash is under investigation.

Parts of West Point Loma Boulevard were blocked off after the crash and police provided traffic control in the area.
