Tennis Player Travels to Wrong Carlsbad

Travel agent booked the wrong flight to New Mexico

A Serbian tennis player hoping to compete in Carlsbad’s Mercury Insurance Open this week ended up flying to Carlsbad, N.M., reports our media partner North County Times.

Tournament officials J. Fred Sidhu said world's 53rd-ranked women's singles player Bojana Jovanovski was accidentally sent to Carlsbad, N.M. after her travel agent booked the wrong flight.

Sidhu said an assistant in the tournament transportation office took a call Sunday from the 19-year-old player, who wondered where her ride was. Jovanovski asked a pilot standing nearby for help and determined she was in the wrong Carlsbad, Sidhu said.

After the mishap, tournament officials were able to get her to Albuquerque and then to the correct Carlsbad on Monday. She arrived hours before her first-round match at La Costa Resort & Spa. She ended up losing to Sicily's Roberta Vinci, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Jovanovski has since left the area and will play next in the next Women's Tennis Association event in Toronto.
