The attempt to recall several members of the Sweetwater Union High School District school board is one step closer to the November ballot.
Board member John McCann was served recall papers Tuesday night. He now must respond before the recall can be certified by the San Diego County Registrar.
Two other recall attempts have been certified by the Registrar including Jim Cartmill and Arlie Ricassa.
The recall efforts were sparked by the December 2011 raids of several board members’ homes. Several of the board members targeted in the raids have been charged in an alleged pay-to-play scheme.
The San Diego District Attorney’s office said current and former board members Gregory Sandoval, Pearl Quinones, Arlie Ricassa and Jesus Gandara accepted gifts from contractors and then awarded them lucrative contracts.
All have pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The homes of McCann and Cartmill were not raided and the two board members are not under investigation.
However, critics of the board began a movement to recall the entire board even those not indicted.
Board member Bertha Lopez, whose home was raided but was never charged, and Pearl Quinones are not targets of the recall effort because they will be up for re-election on the November ballot.
