A man surrendered to police early Monday after a nine-hour standoff with a SWAT team in Birdland, police said.
Officers were called to a home on Seagull Court, near Fletcher Elementary School, for a welfare check at about 4:45 p.m. when they heard what sounded like a gunshot coming from inside the house, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.
Police believed the man had a weapon and was a threat to himself so the SWAT team was called in to negotiate with the man.
A perimeter was established around the house and nearby residents were told to shelter in place, Buttle said.
Crisis negotiators used a megaphone to talk the man into surrendering but the man remained barricaded inside the home for about nine hours.
At about 1:30 a.m. Monday, the man came out of the home and was taken into police custody. He was transported to a mental health facility.
There were no injuries in the standoff, SDPD said.
