Man Surrenders, Children Unharmed After Rancho Penasquitos Standoff

The man locked himself in the house with his three kids after making death threats to his wife, police said

A man threatening his wife locked himself inside their Rancho Penasquitos home Monday evening with their three young kids, prompting an hours-long SWAT standoff.

San Diego police (SDPD) first responded to the home after the sister of the mother involved called the police around 9:51 p.m. to report a domestic disturbance at the home, near Brome Way and Vervain Street.

The husband threatened his wife with death, police said.

The mother was able to escape the home, but the three young children, all under the age of five, remained inside. The father locked himself inside the home with the kids, and locked his wife out, police said.

Police soon called SWAT and ENT teams to the scene, out of concern for the children, based on the statements the father had made.

Officers tried to talk with the husband by calling his cell phone and speaking on a PA system, but the man never came out of the home.

After more than an hour, the man came out of the home voluntarily, police said.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken into custody. He will receive a mental health evaluation.

The kids inside were unharmed. Police said the man never made threats to the kids.

No other information was available.
