SUV Crushes Carport, Vehicles in Mira Mesa

An SUV flew off an embankment and landed on a Mira Mesa carport early Tuesday, crushing several cars below it and forcing crews to find a way to hoist it out.

Tire marks tracked the path the SUV took at about 1 a.m. -- from an elevated portion of the Maya Linda Apartments on Carroll Canyon Road, through some bushes and a fence, into the air, and on top of the carport's awning.

One person, likely the SUV's driver, was transported to an area hospital with unknown injuries.

A truck and a station wagon parked underneath the carport were partially crushed. it did not appear anyone was inside either vehicle at the time of the crash.

NBC 7 news cameras were rolling as crews used a crane Tuesday morning to attempt to hoist the SUV slowly off the carport and lower it onto a tow truck.

Cleanup lasted several hours. Crews cleared the scene before 11 a.m., leaving the crushed carport and the two vehicles cordoned off with caution tape.
