Man Armed With Gun Barricades Self in Mission Valley Hotel

A Mission Valley hotel was evacuated Thursday afternoon after a man, armed with a gun, barricaded himself inside a room, San Diego police confirmed.

The incident on the 1300 block of Hotel Circle South at the Atwood Hotel ended at about 10 p.m. Thursday, nearly 10 hours after it began. 

A housekeeper said the man in his 60s was a guest at the hotel, according to police. The man pointed a handgun at the housekeeper, prompting a SWAT standoff.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said the incident ended when officers entered the hotel and found the suspect had a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 

The suspect was transported to the hospital in unknown condition.

The hotel was evacuated during the incident. Roadways were expected to reopen shortly after 10 p.m.

The 1200 block of Camino Del Rio South was closed to traffic, according to SDPD Chief Shelley Zimmerman.
