Arrest Made in Chula Vista Shooting

A man wanted for shooting his 27-year-old neighbor Friday after a dispute turned himself into police Sunday morning, according to Chula Vista police.

Arnulfo Luis Flores, 66, turned himself into San Diego Police around 9:30 a.m. and was booked on three counts, including attempted murder, assault with a firearm and child cruelty, said police.

Luis was wanted for attempted murder after he shot his neighbor with a shotgun in the front yard of the man’s home in the 300 block of Beech Avenue sometime before 8 p.m. Friday, said Lt. Daniel Hardman with CVPD.

Flores and his neighbor had allegedly been arguing about the noise the victim was making while repairing a lawnmower.  The two were said to have a history with each other, said Hardman.

At some point during the argument Flores ran back to his home across the street to grab the shotgun before coming back out and shooting the victim, said Hardman.

Flores was charged with child cruelty because he shot the victim in front of children, said police. It’s unknown how many children or how close they were, but police said they were close enough to witness the crime.

The victim sustained injuries to his legs, and Flores ran back into his home after the shooting, according to Hardman.

Officers were unable to locate Flores after arriving on the scene at 7:52 p.m. They concluded he was in his home, said Hardman.

A SWAT team was called in as a precaution and waited to get a warrant before entering Flores' residence, said Hardman. Once SWAT entered they found that Flores had fled.

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment and his injuries were not life-threatening.
