Suspect Booked in 9-Year Old Cold Case: SDSO

29-year old Idris “Rashad” Jones died on May 7, 2007 from a gunshot wound to his upper body

A suspect was re-booked into jail on a single count of murder on Monday in relation to a nine-year old cold case, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department (SDSO) confirmed.

Marlin Royal, 42, had been serving a 40-year sentence in a state prison for robbery and kidnapping that happened in Los Angeles County.

He is accused of shooting and killing 29-year old Idris “Rashad” Jones on May 7, 2007.

Jones was found lying on the street around 10:28 p.m. on the 2300 block of Millar Ranch Road in Spring Valley. He had a gunshot wound to his upper body.

His death was ruled a homicide following an autopsy but the case went cold.

Investigators from the Sheriff's homicide cold case team and the District Attorney's Office worked over the span of nine years to solve this case.

Royal was re-booked on the murder charge Monday.
