Lifeguards Rescue Man Stuck on Rocks at Sunset Cliffs

San Diego lifeguards and emergency crews were called to Sunset Cliffs Thursday to rescue a man who became stranded on the rocks at the popular seaside spot in Point Loma.

Officials arrived in the 900-block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard at 2:30 p.m. to begin the rescue operation.

Lifeguards said the 18-year-old man wasn’t injured, just stuck in the rocks below.

Aerial shots of the scene showed the man sitting on the rocks barefoot.

Up on the cliffs above, a large crowd of beachgoers gathered to watch the rescue.

By 2:55 p.m., a lifeguard had rappelled down the cliffs and made contact with the man.

The man was strapped into a harness and helmet. Supported by the lifeguard, he then began making his way up the cliffs. By 3:10 p.m., he was back up top, on safe land, unharmed.

At this point, it is unclear how the man got down into the rocks in the first place – whether he scaled down on foot or swam up to the rocks.

Sunset Cliffs is a popular, picturesque destination west of downtown San Diego frequented by locals and visitors alike.

On Jan. 12, Chicago graduate student Anna Bachman, 25, fell to her death while posing for a picture at the coastal cliffs. The fatal fall was between 40 to 50 feet down the cliffs.
