And many sports enthusiasts, fans and media outlets took to social media to honor the San Diego Padres icon.
His influence on both the game of baseball and on the city of San Diego were felt in the tweets paying homage to "Mr. Padre."
Gwynn, regarded by many to be one the best Major League Baseball hitters of all time, died June 16, 2014 from cancer to the salivary gland. Since then, there have been several movements to memorialize Gwynn throughout San Diego County.
