Smoke Reported at U-T Packaging Building

Officials said a vacuum pump likely caught on fire and caused smoke to rise from the building just before 11 a.m.

A fire engine responded to the U-T San Diego building located at 350 Camino de la Reina Saturday after smoke was reported in the building’s packaging room, which contains the printing presses.

According to fire officials the call came in just before 11 a.m.

The smoke rising from the building was caused by a vacuum pump that likely caught on fire, officials said. It was quickly extinguished.

Employees were briefly evacuated from the building.

U-T reporter Chris Cadelago said there were 15 to 20 people in the building during the incident, some in the main office and some from the packaging department. Cadelago said they were allowed to re-enter a short time later.

No injuries were reported.
