The California Higway Patrol (CHP) issued a Sig Alert for Interstate 5 in Chula Vista Monday after a possible multiple vehicle collision.
According to CHP, the crash happened at approximately 9:18 p.m. on the southbound Interstate 5 at E Street.
An 85-year-old man died from head injuries he suffered when his Ford Focus was struck by another vehicle. The impact sent the Ford into a concrete wall.
It's not clear if the Ford was disabled in the middle lane before it was struck by a 2009 Infinity, California Highway Patrol officers said. The Infinity driver was not injured.
Emergency personnel rushed the Ford driver to UC San Diego Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
Caltrans requested a long-term closure, prompting a Sig Alert. Only one lane was open until after midnight, CHP said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
