Sex, Lies and a Trailer on Prison Grounds

Matthew Hedge lived in a trailer just outside Donovan State Prison in Otay Mesa, confined there because no community in San Diego wanted the convicted child molester released to their backyard.

One week ago, Hedge was taken back into custody because his doctors say Hedge can't be trusted to live even by himself on prison grounds, prosecutors revealed Thursday.

Hedge, who molested four children in the late '80s and was committed to the sexually violent predator treatment program in 1997, was arrested by officers from the San Diego Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement Task on Thursday, Nov. 5

In letter addressed to Judge Michael Wellington released Thursday, the director of Hedge's outpatient program reports that Hedge violated the terms of his release by lying during a polygraph exam.

Among the doctor's allegations are that Hedge lied about using his cell phone to take pictures of women and then using those images to masturbate, lied about owning and using a vibrator and lied about revealing those transgressions in treatment.

According to the outpatient program staff, the dishonesty shown by Hedge is "usually characteristic of untreated sex offenders."

"The fact that his problematic and surreptitious sexual interests may be escalating, that these behaviors have arisen so early in his release, and occurred under the strictest supervision, causes all CST members concern to the point that we feel that his risk for re-offense has increased to the point that he needs secure confinement," Alan Stilman, Director of LCSW Community Program wrote.

Prosecutors are asking Judge Wellington to revoke Hedge's release and put him back in the Coalinga State Hospital.

Hedge had his supervised release revoked in 2006, within six weeks of it being granted. His latest release came on April 13, 2009.
