Four or five small fires are burning on Camp Pendleton, according to fire officials.
The blazes are burning in an "impact area" in the north-central area of the base, according to Bill Gick, a fire inspector for the Camp Pendleton Fire and Emergency Services Department. Gick said the "small" fires were not a threat to anyone at this time but that firefighters are monitoring the situation. He said officials expected the fires to all burn themselves out.
Motorists on Interstate 5 may be able to see smoke from the fires, said Gick, but they would not be in any danger.
It's likely the blazes were begun by live-fire exercises at Camp Pendleton, since the fires are burning in an area where troops train.
Gick did not have an acreage estimate for the burn area.
