SDUSD Investigates Principals in Financial Audit

Local high school principals allegedly signed time cards for work that was never performed

The San Diego Unified School District is investigating startling accusations against some of its school's principals.

Those accusations allege that the principals signed time cards for extra duty that was never performed.

An audit of the schools is set to be released Tuesday. It comes after an investigation into principals at San Diego High School -- past and present.

The investigation comes just a few weeks after students in the School of International Studies held a silent protest against the decision to place one of their principals on leave. The district said that's a personnel matter, and nothing about the situation will be released with the audit.  Read update on San Diego HS principal here

The allegations of fiscal mismanagement look into three major items. First that the principals signed time cards for extra duty that was not performed, so the district was billed for time not worked. Second, that the money was funneled into special funds that were illegally used.

Third: on a chaperoned trip to Las Vegas, chaperones stayed in separate hotels from where students stayed.

Tuesday, the district's closed door agenda includes 10 cases of public employee discipline, dismissal or release. The 10 cases could go back a couple years -- some principals more culpable than others.

The district would only confirm that an investigation is underway.

An audit has been conducted, and the results should be released this week.

San Diego High school is reeling because of the suspension of the principal of the School of International Studies.

The District says because it's a personnel matter nothing about that situation will be released with the audit.

An educational leader at the school says despite the suspension of the school principal, faculty and staff are making sure learning is going on in the classroom.
