1 Person Dead After Shooting Near Alvarado Hospital, 2 Teens Arrested

Shots were fired just outside Alvarado Hospital and the Iconic on Alvarado apartment complex

Two teenagers were arrested in connection with a deadly shooting near Alvarado Hospital in the College Area this month, police said Thursday.

A 14- and 15-year-old were placed into juvenile detention in connection with the shooting death of Ishi Hampton, 39, the San Diego Police Department said.

On the morning of May 2, officers were called to the 6600 block of Alvarado Road, just outside Alvarado Hospital and the Iconic on Alvarado apartment complex for a report of shots fired.

Police found Hampton, with a gunshot wound to his upper body, SDPD said. Hampton was rushed to a hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead just before 7 a.m.

Police could be seen searching the College Area for the suspects involved; police said they were looking for two or three people, in their teens to mid-30s, wearing hooded sweatshirts and ripped jeans, who were seen running from the scene on Reservoir Drive.

A woman who did not want to be identified but told NBC 7 she was Hampton's loved one said he lived at the Iconic on Alvarado complex. She believed Hampton was going to his car when the shooting happend.

SDPD said the victim may have interacted with the two suspects before gunshots were fired, but police did not specify what could have led to shots being fired.

Commuters in the area were advised to expect delays as police investigate the shooting, SDPD said. Police tape blocked off a portion of Alvarado Road for several hours.

The area is a busy transportation hub; The Metropolitan Transit System's Green Line stops outside the hospital.

It is also common for people to be in the area in the morning hours for medical appointments at Alvarado Hospital.
