Man Arrested for DUI, Machete Attack in In-N-Out Parking Lot: SDPD

A man was arrested for allegedly cutting two men with a machete and driving under the influence in a Midway District parking lot Saturday night.

Ian Smigels, 25, faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and DUI, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The incident occurred just before 9:30 p.m. at an address on Sports Arena Boulevard that appears to be an In-N-Out Burger.

Police said Smigels was driving in a “reckless manner” in the restaurant’s parking lot and almost hit two men, aged 40 and 41.

Smigels then got out of the car and reportedly began swinging a machete at the two men, according to SDPD.

The blade struck the 40-year-old’s forehead, but officers said the cut was not life-threatening.

The 41-year-old was also hit. The suspect reportedly struck his nose, causing a minor cut, police said.

During the confrontation, the two men were able to hold Smigels down until police arrived.

The 40-year-old was taken to the hospital while the older man declined to go to the hospital.

SDPD continues to investigate.
