A San Diego woman chasing her loose dog in a shopping center parking lot Tuesday was struck by an armored truck and later died, police confirmed.
Mikaela Jones, 22, died after being hit by a Garda truck just after 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the La Jolla Village Shopping Center off Villa La Jolla Drive, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Jones was chasing down her dog after it got away from her and the dog's scurry led her right into the path of the truck, police said.
The armored vehicle ran over Jones and dragged her along the roadway.
Witnesses say seconds before the dog got loose, the woman could be heard arguing with her boyfriend. Following the accident, an officer was seen consoling the man who had collapsed to the ground after learning his girlfriend had died at a nearby hospital.
Tuesday was Jones' 22nd birthday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner
"Tragic," witness Daron Chock called the accident. She had just walked out of a nearby shop when the boyfriend received the news. "The one officer held and hugged him."
Police do not believe the argument played a role in the deadly collision.
Investigators reviewed several security systems from nearby businesses and said the woman's hand appeared to be up in the air as the large truck approached. They couldn't confirm if she was waving at someone nearby or waving at the truck to try and tell the driver to stop.
