Chemicals, Explosives Found as Crews Investigate Suspicious Death in Valley Center: Deputies

Deputies have been investigating a suspicious death in a home near Valley View Casino in Valley Center since around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The San Diego County Sheriff's Department said deputies were called to a home on Lake Wohlford Road that morning by a mother who requested a welfare check on her son after she hadn't heard from him in several days.

Deputies went to the home and found a man in distress with injuries to his upper body. The man was pronounced dead at around 9:15 a.m.

Detectives found "explosives and unknown chemicals" in their search but told NBC 7 the items do not pose a danger to the public.

Homicide detectives arrived about an hour-and-a-half later.

“There was indications that this was a suspicious death,” said Lt. Chad Boudreau with SDSO’s Homicide Unit.

The cause of the man's death has yet to be determined. It is not clear whether the mother or the son, or both, lived at the home.

The scene is just north of the casino. Deputies were still investigating as of 11:20 p.m. Hazmat and Bomb/Arson teams are assisting in the investigation.
