Crash Kills Driver Who Led Police on Chase Through Chula Vista

A driver who led police on a short pursuit in Chula Vista Wednesday died in a crash that also injured two of his passengers. The driver was identified on Friday as 32-year-old Chula Vista resident, Alfonso Huizar.

Huizar crashed his Mercedes station wagon near Hilltop Drive and Oxford Street just before 8 p.m., according to the Chula Vista Police Department.

Police attempted to pull the Mercedes over for driving without headlights, but Huizar did not stop, according to CVPD.

Shortly after the pursuit was initiated, Huizar lost control and hit a retaining wall and a utility pole.

"When it got to the dip, it was going so fast that it created sparks on the ground, and I think it lost control once it got to the corner," witness Alejandra Arana said.

The CVPD confirmed Alfonso Huizar, a documented gang member, died at the scene. His two passengers – a man and a woman – suffered minor injuries.

The two passengers were both transported to a local hospital where they were later arrested, police said. The woman was arrested for an outstanding felony warrant and weapons charges. The man was arrested for weapon and narcotics related charges.

A loaded semi-automatic handgun was found inside the station wagon, according to CVPD.

Police also confirmed that one of the two passengers was a documented gang member.
