Brush Fire Contained Near San Elijo Lagoon

Firefighters extinguished a brush fire burning along Interstate 5 near Manchester Avenue and the San Elijo Lagoon.

The forward spread of the fire was stopped at about 7 p.m. and managed to burn a half-acre.

The fire sparked around 5:30 p.m. and at least three homes were evacuated, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The Carlsbad and Encinitas fire departments both responded.

At least one helicopter made a water drop over the fire. Another helicopter dropped off a crew of firefighters in the open space where the fire was burning. Several fire engines were parked on neighborhood streets lining the lagoon.

No injuries and no damage was reported.
