School's Out for Most on Friday

Educators around the county announced Thursday that students would be taking the day off on Friday due to the power outage that began at about 3:30.

Classes would resume Monday for all county and city students, officials announced Thursday afternoon. Many private schools were expected to be shuttered as well -- parents of students are being urged to contact school officials before heading in.

On Thursday Classes at San Diego State University have been canceled for Friday because of a power outage that has left up to 5 million people without electricity in Southern California, Arizona and Mexico.

The university's web site said Thursday that students living in dormitories are being given food, water and other supplies as efforts are under way to restore power throughout the region.

The story was the same at all the other major colleges and universities around the region. Cal State San Marcos, UCSD, the University of San Diego and other schools would be closed Friday as well.

SDSU's football team managed to fly out of San Diego International Airport, however. All outbound flights had been initially grounded. The team was en route to New York where they play Army on Saturday.
