San Marcos High Student Killed in Apparent Drowning Accident Near Las Vegas

A San Marcos High School student died in a possible drowning accident at Lake Mojave near Las Vegas last week, officials in Nevada confirm.

Initial reports indicate the teen, identified by the Clark County Coroner's Office as 16-year-old Jonathan Gabriel James, was swimming in the reservoir on July 3 when bystanders saw him struggle and go underwater, according to NBC Las Vegas.

James was pulled from the water and witnesses performed CPR until paramedics came. He was then transported to a Las Vegas hospital where he later died.

James' mother said her family recently moved to Imperial Beach after living almost their entire life in the San Eligio area in Carlsbad.

A family friend told NBC 7 the James attended San Marcos High and was in the school band.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help James' family.

Lake Mojave is a reservoir along the Colorado River that straddles the Nevada-Arizona border about 96 miles southeast of Las Vegas.
