San Diego's Crime Rate Drops 17%

But economy causes spike in domestic violence calls.

Overall crime is down nearly 17 percent in San Diego. The mayor's office released crime statistics for the first three months of this year.

Violent crime was down nearly ten percent from last year.  Property- related offenses, like burglaries, dropped nearly 18 percent.

There was some bad news, however. Reported rapes were up nearly nine percent and domestic violence was up two percent.

San Diego police chief  says the economy and family problems, such as job losses, could be to blame for the increase in
domestic violence cases.
