A San Diego County couple has pleaded guilty in federal court to selling unapproved medical devices they claimed could treat cancer and AIDS.

David and Sandra Perez admitted on Tuesday to scamming customers with a device known as the "Energy Wave."

According to a U.S. attorney's office statement, the couple sold the device over the Internet without prior approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Each device was sold for about $1,200 to $1,500. They earned approximately $271,000.

David Perez admitted intending to defraud and mislead the FDA, and Sandra Perez admitted to assisting her husband in the scheme.

David Perez could get up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Sandra Perez could get up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
