Locals Compete for Other Nations in 2016 Rio Olympics

Two local athletes will be taking part in the Olympic opening ceremony but walking with other countries.

San Diego State University graduate Shanieka Thomas will compete in the women’s triple jump for Jamaica.

Born in St. Andrew, Jamaica, Thomas had a decorated track and field career with the Aztecs. She is a three-time NCAA Triple Jump Champion and the 2013 Mountain West Female Athlete of the Year.

On April 8, the 24-year-old posted a personal best that was also the best triple jump mark in the world – 47 feet, 9 ΒΎ inches or 14.57 meters.

Point Loma Nazarene University freshman Jordan Mageo will run the Women’s 100m as a member of the American Samoa Olympic Team.

Mageo, 19, earned four varsity letters in track and field, and three in volleyball while at Scripps Ranch HS.
