Salvation Army in Retreat

The San Diego Salvation Army is issuing a code red to the public after holiday donations are coming in far lower than last year.

Suzy Lacey, spokeswoman for the San Diego chapter, said that as of Dec. 5, Internet and mail-in donations are down 21 percent from last year.   Donations to the kettles collected by Salvation Army bell-ringers are down 25 percent. Lacey attributes most of the downturn to the economy but also said it may be because Thanksgiving was a little later this year, providing less time to collect for the holidays.

The Salvation Army as well as other local charities are issuing pleas for giving in the hopes of getting a surge in donations in the coming weeks.
