A driver and a nine-year-old passenger escaped a wreck after their SUV went off a cliff near Sunset Cliffs and crashed into rocks below narrowly avoiding plunging into the Pacific Ocean.
The vehicle drove off the roadway near Orchard Avenue, north of Sunset Cliffs, just before 7:30 p.m., according to SDPD Officer John Buttle. The driver told police her brakes failed before she and a 9-year-old passenger rolled over the ledge.
Both were taken to the hospital for treatment. The 9-year-old was unconscious but breathing and suffered cuts to her face, Buttle said.
The car landed came to rest on a pile of rocks just short of the ocean, Buttle said.
