Military officials identified a sailor killed in a brutal attack in his apartment earlier this week.
Charles Kenneth Schoeneman, 32, was found dead on Wednesday morning in an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Conrad Drive in the Casa de Oro community in East County. He lived alone in the apartment, reported the San Diego Union-Tribune.
T he county sheriff's department is working with the the Naval Criminal Investigative Service on the case, the paper reported. The Border Patrol said an agent is sitting in on the investigation for training purposes.
Schoeneman had not reported for duty in two days, according to investigators, who said they were notified about the situation after another sailor went to the apartment complex to check on him and found the body.
The paper reported that a Navy representative said Schoeneman was an operations specialist, second class, with the Commander Naval Surface Forces 4th Fleet as an operations specialist.
