Remembering Chelsea

Slain Poway teen Chelsea King would have turned 18 on July 1.

Earlier this year, the teen told her mother she wanted to skydive together to celebrate her birthday, and to honor Chelsea's memory on Thursday, Kelly King planned on honoring the promise she made before the teen's death at the hands of multiple murderer John Gardner in February.

On the Chelsea's Light Facebook page on Thursday, Kelly posted a message to the public and to her daughter.

"On this day, we would have hugged her, told her how much we loved her and wished her a happy birthday as she came in from her morning run.... On this day instead, we will still hug her tightly in our hearts ... she and I will go up in a plane today, and as I jump, I will feel her on my shoulder and we will be giddy and nervous with excitement," the message said in part.

The family asked for privacy during the jump.

Gardner, who also was convicted of murdering Escondido teen Amber Dubois, is serving a life sentence for the Poway teen's murder.
