Rebuilding Fees Waived for Residents Who Lost Homes in West Fire

On Wednesday, the County Board of Supervisors voted to waive rebuilding permit and vital records fees for residents who lost their homes just weeks ago in the West Fire.

Homeowners in the affected areas will be eligible for plan check review and rebuilding permit fee waivers for legal structures destroyed or damaged in the fire.

The West Fire broke out in Alpine and Dulzura on July 6 and burned 504 acres. Fifty-five homes and 34 accessory buildings were destroyed.

The fee waivers would only apply for those homes in the unincorporated area or areas that require county permitting.

The resolution also authorizes the County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk to issue free replacement of marriage, birth and death certificates as well as some real estate documents that were destroyed in the fire.

Residents may also be eligible for property tax relief, if damage from the fire is more than $10,000. Applications are available for a reduced fee and must be filed within a year. Qualified taxpayers may also be able to defer their next installment of property taxes if they have filed a claim for property tax reduction.
