Raw Sewage Spews into Ocean

200-gallons of raw sewage has spilled into the ocean at the Imperial Beach Pier, closing a restaurant and a public restroom, city officials said.

The spill was caused by a broken sewer pipe fitting under the pier. It was discovered around 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Signs warning of sewage-contaminated water have been posted north and south of the Imperial Beach Pier and will remain in place until samples confirm the water is safe for recreational use.

Port of San Diego crews expect repairs to be completed Thursday.
