Possible Panga Spotted off Carlsbad Waters

NBC Universal, Inc.

Rescue crews were called to Carlsbad early in the morning for a report of a maritime human smuggling attempt.

U.S. Border Patrol agents are investigating a possible human smuggling attempt after a panga was spotted in Carlsbad late Sunday.

Rescue crews were called for a report of a possible human smuggling boat off the shores of Tamarack Surf Beach. First responders arrived near the corner of Carlsbad Boulevard and Tamarack Avenue in search of anyone in the water.

A female was found on the beach unconscious and was taken to the local hospital via Carlsbad Fire EMS, the Border Patrol told NBC 7 in the afternoon, adding that her health status was unknown at that time. If it was, in fact, an attempt at human smuggling, it's unclear what happened to any other people who presumably would have been on the boat with her.

The incident is still under investigation, authorities said.
