Police Surround Driver near San Diego Convention Center

An officer was hurt when an erratic driver slammed into a patrol car on Shelter Island before leading police on a chase to downtown San Diego Tuesday morning.

The driver, identified as 32-year-old Andrew Dwight Sigsbee, was taken into custody at the intersection of Park Boulevard and Harbor Drive, near the San Diego Convention Center and Petco Park, about 45 minutes after the pursuit began.

Officers first attempted to pull Sigsbee over at about 5:40 a.m. when they saw him driving erratically on Shelter Island, the Harbor Police Department said.

Instead, Sigsbee took off, slamming his white sedan into a patrol car in the process.

An officer inside the car received minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital, HPD said. He was expected to recover.

He then headed eastbound on Harbor Drive and south past Barrio Logan before running over a spike strip laid down by the San Diego Police Department at Cesar Chavez Parkway, police said.

The driver attempted to keep going but his tires were flattened and his car came to a stop near the convention center.

Footage from Skyranger 7 showed a small white sedan stopped and surrounded by patrol cars. Harbor Police said the driver refused commands from officers to get out of his car.

Eventually, the Sigsbee exited the vehicle and followed officers' orders to crawl towards their patrol vehicles, Harbor police said. He placed his hands behind his back and was taken into custody by police.

Sigsbee was wanted for a felony probation violation and was arrested on suspicion of felony evasion and assault with a deadly weapon.
