Driver Taken Into Custody on I-15 After Chase on 3 San Diego Freeways

A driver was in police custody in Escondido Tuesday after a pursuit that spanned at least three San Diego freeways.

SkyRanger 7 showed police in pursuit of a driver in a gray SUV on northbound State Route 125 at about 9:20 a.m.

The San Diego Police Department said the driver had refused to pull over for a traffic violation but did not disclose any other information on what led to the chase.

Just before 9:30 a.m., the driver transitioned to eastbound SR-52 before the chase continued onto northbound Interstate 5 with police in pursuit.

The SUV was also being followed by a law enforcement helicopter.

At one point, officers deployed spike strips in an attempt to stop the chase but the driver swerved to avoid them.

Shortly after, the driver slowly began to pull to the shoulder of I-15 near the 9th Avenue/Auto Park Way exit.

At about 9:45 a.m., patrol cars surrounded the vehicle as a man, who has not yet been identified, slowly opened the SUV's driver-side door and exited the vehicle.

He put his hands up, slowly backed towards officers and was taken into custody.

It was not clear what charges the man would be facing.
