Two Dead in Mountain View Double Shooting

Two people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds and one later died

Two men were killed in broad daylight Sunday at Mountain View Park while there were people outside playing sports, police said.

The shooting happened around 1:25 p.m. at the Mountain View Community Center on the 600 block of South Boundary Street, according to the San Diego Police Department (SDPD). There were people playing soccer in the park at the time of the shooting, homicide Lt. Anthony Dupree said.

The suspect walked up to the men, ages 33 and 37, and shot them multiple times in the upper body, he said. The suspect, described as a black man, took off on Westbound Hemlock Street, Dupree said.

Officers performed CPR on the men before they were transported to the hospital where they later died, he said.

Police are now investigating the case as a homicide and the park will be shut down for several hours, Dupree said. It was not clear if the shooting was gang-related, but police have not ruled out that possibility, he said.

Less than eight hours after the shooting, another shooting was reported less than two miles away. It was not clear if the two were connected but one person was killed in the Logan Heights shooting

A person in the area when the Mountain View shooting occurred told NBC 7 a man came running toward him after hearing some gunshots, jumped into a car and drove off. It was unclear at this point if the man was a suspect in the case.

As investigators comb the scene for evidence, residents nearby are hoping for answers.

"It's sad. There are no winners here," said Tracy, who declined to give his last name. "Somebody just lost their kid, their dad, their son. For the person that did it, he's going to get caught and go to prison for this. So there's nobody winning here."

Tracey said the shooting is not the norm in this neighborhood.

Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to contact the San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit.
