2-Hour Standoff Ends in North Park

Evacuations were prompted after the suspect called to say he was suicidal

North Park residents were on edge Saturday night after a more than two-hour standoff prompted evacuations.

Police were serving Kyle Norris, 27, felony warrants for auto theft and parole violations Saturday evening when he slammed the door on them and refused to come out of his home in the 3500 block of Florida Street, San Diego police said.

Eventually Norris called a dispatcher saying he wanted to surrender, but wasn’t sure it was police outside of his home even though officers had used a bullhorn and attempted to call him during the standoff, authorities said.

By 10 p.m. he came out with both hands up and surrendered to police.

He also called to say he was suicidal, forcing police to evacuate homes and set up a perimeter around the house.

Faye Ketchum owns the home where Norris was holed up, and could see the San Diego Police Department's Patrol SWAT Team with guns drawn.

β€œFeeling nervous,” she said. β€œWe’ve rented this house 51 years and this is the first time any problem like that has ever happened.”

Police said they're searching the house for a weapon.

Norris' girlfriend, who rents the house, and a child were inside the home initially, but walked out of their own free will.
