The main gate at Naval Air Station North Island was shut down for about two hours Thursday afternoon after a suspicious pickup truck was left there.
Around 1:20 p.m., the driver of the stolen truck abandoned the vehicle at the main gate and ran east toward Orange Avenue in Coronado, according to police.
A Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team was called out to search the truck, which they later determined to be safe. Nearby residents were asked to shelter in place during the ordeal, Commander Laszlo Wacsek with the Coronado Police Department said.
Drivers were asked to use the First Street and Ocean Boulevard gates while the main gate was closed. The main gate to NASNI is located at Third Street and Alameda Boulevard in Coronado.
Soon after the suspected vehicle was abandoned, police located four suspects near 3rd Street and Orange Avenue and took them into custody.
Jesus Alfoso Holguin, 29; Josie Evelyn Holguin, 29; Victor Juarez, 22; and an unidentified juvenile were arrested for auto theft and conspiracy to commit auto theft.
The pickup truck was later reported stolen from the area of Mullinix Drive in Coronado and has been taken into police custody.
