“Kinky Boots”, a musical based off a 2005 film inspired by a true story, features exquisite costumes, like the ones you see above. The musical follows a man who inherits a failing shoe factory – and the unlikely partnership with a drag queen and her angels that help bring the factory back to life.

Actors in the Tony Award-winning show – especially Lola and her Angels – will often change costumes multiple times throughout the show. The show, with a book by Tony-winning Harvey Fierstein and music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, opened on Broadway in 2013. The show won six Tony Awards, including the trophy’s for Best Musical, Best Choreography and Best Score.

Many of the costumes and shoes in the show cost tens of thousands of dollars. The most expensive boot in the show? Upwards of $30,000 to make, per pair. Some of the more elaborate costumes you’ll see in the show – like the ones pictured here, which the Angels wear in the finale – cost tens of thousands of dollars, and are designed precisely, down to the every detail.

The boots you see in the show are custom made for each actor. “They should fit like a glove,” said San Diego native Meryn Beckett. Beckett is the show’s assistant dance captain and a swing, which means she covers multiple roles in the show if a performer cannot go on. Ten to fifteen measurements are taken per shoe. Costume and footwear designer Gregg Barnes, who worked on the Broadway show, said it was quite a challenge to design the unique boots you see in the show: thigh-high, six inch stiletto heels. “What’s really funny about our experience with Kinky Boots is that my team, and the cobblers who made the boots, we had the exact same story as in the musical,” Barnes said in a statement. “Everything they talk about in terms of reinforcing the heel and all of that stuff, we had the same learning curve!”

“Kinky Boots” also features dozens and dozens of wigs. In nearly every scene Lola’s Angels are in, they are wearing a different wig.

The wig seen above is used in the boxing scene: an Angel, played by John Dempsey, acts as a referee.
