A Camp Pendleton Marine was killed in combat this week in Afghanistan, according to the Marine Corps.
Sgt. Matthew T. Abbate, 26, of Honolulu died Thursday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, the Department of Defense said.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2006. This was his second combat deployment.
Abbate was with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton.
