Man, 87, Killed in Crash on Mira Mesa Boulevard

John Fitzpatrick, of San Diego, was killed while walking across Mira Mesa Boulevard Monday morning

Officials have identified an elderly man hit and killed by a car in Mira Mesa earlier this week as he tried to cross the street.

San Diego resident John Fitzpatrick, 87, was hit by a car as he tried to cross the 9100 block of Mira Mesa Boulevard just west of Black Mountain Road at around 6:30 a.m. Monday.

The street was dark and he was crossing the busy area during peak morning commute hours. The San Diego Police Department said Fitzpatrick had been attempting to walk outside of a controlled intersection. He was wearing dark clothing when he stepped off the center median about 100 yards from a controlled intersection and walked into the street. He was struck by an Acura being driven by a 21-year-old on his way to work.

Fitzpatrick suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver told police he did not see the man on the dark road, according to SDPD. He called 911 and remained on scene to cooperate with authorities. The driver was not cited for the crash.

An NBC 7 news crew at the scene said the driver appeared visibly shaken.

A second car was pulled over at the crash site but did not appear to be involved in the collision.

A SigAlert was issued for westbound lanes of Mira Mesa Boulevard at Black Mountain Road. All lanes were closed to traffic but were reopened before 9:30 a.m.
