An erratic driver struck a man and four parked cars in a Mountain View neighborhood Thursday morning and took off, leaving behind the severely injured man and a trail of destruction.

A 46-year-old man was getting into a parked car along National Avenue near 37th Street when he was struck by a Lincoln SUV at about 4:15 a.m., the San Diego Police Department said.

He was left in the street with major head trauma and a spinal fracture as the driver -- described as a 30-year-old heavy set man about 5 feet 7 inches tall --took off on foot westbound, SDPD said.

The injured man was taken to a local hospital for treatment but his current condition was not known.

The suspect also struck four other parked cars before his SUV stalled. Some of the cars were pushed onto the sidewalk. Hubcaps and debris was scattered across the roadway.

Witnesses said the suspect was wearing a black hat and a white t-shirt. He had not been located as of 11 a.m. Thursday.

It was not clear if drugs or alcohol were suspected. The driver faces felony hit-and-run charges, according to police.
