Pedestrian Dies in Crash with Coaster Train in Del Mar

A man died after being hit by a Coaster commuter train Friday afternoon in Del Mar, a sheriff's deputy said.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. in the area of Eighth Street and Stratford Court, San Diego County sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins said.

Coaster Train 645 was heading northbound at the time of the accident, North County Transit District spokeswoman Kim Wall said.

The train was traveling around 53 mph when it struck the 62-year-old man, Deputy Brian Abraham said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

No passengers on the train were hurt in the crash, Wall said.

The track was closed for nearly 2 1/2 hours as authorities investigate the crash. It was reopened around 4 p.m.

A bus bridge ferried passengers between the Oceanside and Sorrento Valley transit stations while the track was closed, Wall said.
