Park to Honor Boys Slain in 1993

19 years later, candlelight vigil will allow family and community to mourn

The mothers of two childhood friends murdered 19 years ago will hold a special vigil Thursday to honor their sons.

Jonathan Sellers, 9, and Charlie Keever, 13, were molested and murdered in 1993 in Palm City. Eight years later, detectives tracked down Scott Erskine and identified him as the killer.

The boys will also have a park dedicated in their names. The Jonathan Sellers and Charlie Keever Educational Activity Center will be a small park adjacent to the Bayshore Bikeway.

Jonathan's mother, Milena Sellers-Phillips, says she's been pushing for vigil and park for years after the boys were murdered.

Erskine is currently on death row at San Quentin. In a 2010 interview, Sellers-Philips criticized the death penalty system, saying she would probably die before the killer of her son would.

The Candlelight Vigil will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at Swiss Park Banquet Hall in Chula Vista.

Congressman Bob Filner and Senator Juan Vargas are among those speakers expected at the vigil, according to the Jonathan Sellers and Charlie Keever Foundation's website
